California rideshare coverage changes with trip status. Liability coverage and passenger uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage are distinct.

## California rideshare liability insurance by trip stage

The chaptered text of SB 371 addresses $1 million in primary liability coverage during the covered accepted-trip period and passenger UM/UIM of $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident. It also addresses policy priority. Do not read those different figures as amounts every claimant can add together.

## Passenger UM/UIM coverage under SB 371

Review the crash date, trip stage, role of each person, and policy version. A receipt or app record may help establish status. Other potentially applicable insurance requires separate review. This guide does not determine an insurer’s duty or the amount a person can recover.

## Other policies require separate review

For a useful review, keep the following information together. You do not need to enter it on this website.

- The actual policy, bill, report, or notice involved.
- Dates and facts that could change which rule applies.
- The questions you want an attorney to answer before you take a step.

### Waller v. Truck Ins. Exchange, Inc.

(1995) 11 Cal.4th 1, pp. 18–19. The court read the policy to decide if a loss might be covered. What the contract says matters.

Limits: This was a business policy. It does not show what your own car policy pays.
