In a freeway pileup, the sequence of impacts can matter more than a simple label such as “the last car caused it.”

## Reconstructing a chain-reaction crash

Several drivers may have separate roles in a chain-reaction collision. California comparative-fault and damages-allocation rules can require more than one analysis. A stopped vehicle, an earlier impact, visibility, or a lane change may be relevant, but no single circumstance assigns everyone a fixed percentage.

## Fault when several vehicles are involved

Make a simple timeline of the impacts you felt or saw. Keep photos showing where vehicles came to rest and identify which agency investigated. For a San Jose freeway crash, check the report custodian rather than assuming a city-street report process applies.

## Court decisions about san jose freeway pileups: multiple drivers and insurance

### Cabral v. Ralphs Grocery Co.

(2011) 51 Cal.4th 764, slip op., pp. 1–3. The court rejected a broad no-duty rule for a truck stopped beside a freeway. Drivers still had to use ordinary care.

Limits: It did not hold that every roadside stop is careless. The facts matter when deciding breach and cause.

### American Motorcycle Assn. v. Superior Court

(1978) 20 Cal.3d 578, pp. 583–584, 598. The court let people who shared blame seek a fair split of the loss from one another.

Limits: Later laws changed some of these rules. Do not use this case alone to divide damages for pain or other nonfinancial harm.
