After an Uber or Lyft crash, the ride status, your role, and the policy terms can affect which coverage applies.

## Why ride status matters after an Uber or Lyft crash

California’s rideshare law separates liability insurance from uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. SB 371 addresses passenger UM/UIM coverage. That is different from coverage for harm caused by a rideshare driver. A reference to a million-dollar policy does not mean every person has a million dollars available.

## Liability coverage versus uninsured motorist coverage

Keep the trip receipt and any safe screenshots that show the trip time, vehicle, and driver. Identify whether you were a passenger, a driver, or in another vehicle. Bring every relevant policy and letter to a review. Other insurance may need analysis; it should not simply be added to the rideshare limit.
