How to Request a San Jose Car Accident Report

To request a San Jose crash report, first identify the agency that investigated. SJPD, CHP, and other agencies have different request processes.

SJPD versus CHP crash reports in San Jose

SJPD’s published guidance says to allow at least 45 days before an online inquiry. It also identifies certain reports that cannot be released online, including specified fatality, emergency-vehicle, felony hit-and-run, and juvenile matters. That guidance is not a promise that every report will be ready on day 45.

Who may request a traffic collision report

Use the official agency link to check current eligibility, identification, request methods, and fees. The CHP San Jose office is a separate source for its reports. A police report is also distinct from the DMV SR-1 filing; getting one does not by itself show you met every reporting duty.

Find the investigating agency before requesting a report

  1. 01

    City-street report

SJPD may be the starting point. Confirm which agency investigated.

  2. 02

    Freeway report

CHP may be the starting point. Check the agency named on your paperwork.

  3. 03

    Agency unknown

Ask the responding agency or check your incident paperwork before choosing a portal.

Road type is a clue, not proof of jurisdiction. A police report request is separate from any DMV reporting duty.
